The North Face story began in 1966 with a very small ski and backpacking brand based in California, founded by Doug Tompkins. Throughout the first decade revolutionary designs began to build a dedicated fan base until in 1977 The North Face secured a lasting partnership with mills and suppliers, and experimented with GORE-TEX. From this point on, The North Face was a dominant force in outdoor clothing.
