Perhaps today best known for its iconic waxed jackets, Barbour was established in 1894 in South Shields’ Market Place. In those days, J. Barbour and Sons Ltd was a local importer of oil cloth; Barbour has since become one of Britain’s most prestigious manufacturers of weatherproofed outerwear as well as ready-to-wear, leather goods, shoes and accessories.
In 1974 the brand was granted a royal warrant to supply “waterproof and protective clothing” by Queen Elizabeth II in 1974, cementing Barbour’s place as one of the most recognised names in British fashion. While over 100 years has passed since the brand was first established, each and every Barbour jacket continues to be manufactured by hand in South Shields’ Simonside factory.
