Demon's Souls PS3

Demon's Souls

    Product Review

    Release Date: 06 August 2010

Beautiful, compelling and unforgiving, Demon's Souls is the hardcore RPG experience PlayStation 3 owners have been waiting for since the platform's launch.

Envelop yourself in the Kingdom of Boletaria, a dark land devastated by the cruel fog that brings demons to feast on mortal souls. Vanquish monstrous demons in unforgiving combat and collect their souls to grow your own power. Progress through a non-linear world exploring ancient castles, deep caves and dark tunnels littered with deadly traps. To succeed you will need to adapt your character, your equipment and your tactics to every unpredictable situation.

Revolutionary online features will support your adventure like never before, presenting seamless interconnectivity that serves in every instance to enhance the single-player game. Team up with other players in simultaneous cooperative play, working together to topple some of the game's colossal bosses, or force your way into the games of skilled players and challenge them to PvP battle.

Leave hints and clues for those who will follow in your footsteps. Your bloodstains, left either intentionally or through your own inadvertent demise, will allow your successors to view a replay of your death, helping them to avoid your gruesome fate. Unprecedented in its depth and subtlety, peerless in its relentlessly challenging gameplay, Demon's Souls is the ultimate action RPG.

    Storyline:
King Allant the XII, the last king of Boletaria, searched tirelessly to expand his might. The Nexus, a great ice shrine nestled in the mountains, bestowed the power of the souls onto him, bringing prosperity to his kingdom. Still unsated, he returned again to the Nexus, where he foolishly awakened the Old One from its eternal slumber. This long forgotten evil, now wrought upon Boletaria, plunged the realm into darkness and fog. A mighty demon horde poured into the kingdom, devouring the souls of men.

Champions from other realms learned of Boletaria's fate and sought to deliver the kingdom from evil; none would return from the cursed land. Called upon by a mysterious maiden in black, you go forth, the last hope for humanity in a place lost to demons and darkness.

    • Unforgiving combat: Demon's Souls is one of the most ruthless and cruel action RPG experiences. Adapt your character and your gameplay to defeat powerful bosses and a host of merciless enemies.
    • Original online multiplayer mode: Leave messages for others with hints on how to avoid or defeat the enemies ahead. Replay the last moments of dead players' lives to see how they died and avoid a similar fate. Team up with others in soul form to defeat bosses, or invade the world of another player as Black Phantom and attempt to kill the host.
    • Unique alignment system: Choose your path through the mire of black and white tendencies to unlock secret events and items. You tendency will affect your own stats as well as those of your enemies.
    • Potent atmosphere: Plunge into the ominous atmosphere of a dark, medieval fantasy world. The beautiful contrast between light and shadow and the fantastic design and animation of the creatures are underscored by an immersive soundtrack.

Great game but too hard for me

I haven't finished Demon's Souls yet, but I'm finding it interesting, beautiful and entertaining, but it is frustrating too... very frustrating. Recommended if you want a serious gaming challenge.

    Demon's souls

It's a very unusual game. It starts off with the main plot being a soul hungry demon who is destroying the world bit by bit and you're called in to save the day. It's an action RPG where you destroy demons and monsters as you progress and use the souls of the fallen enemies to upgrade your skills and weapons. It doesn't tell you much about the world or where to go next and it's extremely difficult but as you'll learn how to deal with the bosses and stages it feels very rewarding to succeed and be able to move on where you moments ago failed. Beneath it's unforgiving and harsh surface lies a fun game. I can recommend it if you're looking for something to challenge yourself with!

    It's good to be dead

This game is not for everyone. If you enjoy more casual titles like World of Goo, Prince of Persia (2008), Reboot and such but don't enjoy grinding same area time and time again, this game is not for you. To quote Jason Pullara: "You're going to die... a lot!" and oh is that true. But if you're hardcore dungeoncrawler and enjoy the challenge then go for it! For me it's at the same time one of the most frustrating games ever and yet I'm absolutely loving every second of it. It's perfect mix of pressing atmosphere, test of nerves and brutal combat. Recommended playing online for more interactivity with other players while you still can. The publisher of Demon's Souls, Atlus, has told that they're going to keep the servers up for at least 2012 but for how long after that? No one knows.

I laughed off the myth of Demon's Souls' impossible challenge, sure I could conquer it in no time. The reality is each battle is a real test of skill and ingenuity. It's an unforgiving hell that sucks you in as potatoes and spits you out as chips. But it's addictive, and keeps you coming back for more. The controls are simple to pick up yet deep enough to master, with different character classes giving a huge boost to the replayability factor. If you can get past the first boss, that is. Two swings of its enormous club and I was dead. But Demon's Souls is terribly rewarding. The feeling you get from progressing one step at a time is phenomenal. Not many games want to test your abilities and watch you grow. Demon's Souls is a real triumph, and the perfect precursor to Dark Souls.

    dungeons and demon's souls

Great game, definitely buy it if you like challenging RPG-style dungeon rompers. Great mix of melee, ranged and magical attacks and vast array of enemies. Probably the hardest game on the PS3, but also one of the best. A word of caution; you will die, lots! But don't be put off, the game is tough but fair. Great price and quick delivery from The Hut.

The game is quite challenging but definitely worth to try. If magic, swords and Diablo (game) is something you like, this game is suitable for you. I would recommend to have internet connection, because otherwise game gives nothing new...

    Very challenging, extremely rewarding!

One of the best games on PS3, extremely hard (involves trial-and-error method) but also extremely rewarding when you success in this game! Multiplayer mode is also interesting, as peoples characters aren't usually at the same area at the same time. Instead, one can see other's as "ghosts" and can leave messages on the floor for each others. By certain items, people can enter each others worlds and help/attack the other person, it's just awesome! There is no save menu but the game uses checkpoints after a boss in an area, so the game may not be for everyone. P.S. The characters has very smooth and varied animations!

One of the best action RPGs

This game is one of the best games for the PS3 there is. The game is an action RPG, meaning there are some stats to upgrade, but it is not overly complicated. The game consists of going through worlds and defeating demons. In this you can either be helped by other people playing the game or be thwarted by them in a novel multiplayer concept that blends in with the single player perfectly. Demon's souls is difficult but fair. When you die in the game it is never because of some faulty game mechanic, but because a foe was just better. It is possible to make the game easier by replaying the lower difficulty levels and increasing your stats. Help from other players can also be employed as it doesn't affect the number of the foes. Expect to put quite some time into the game. When I finished it, I totalled at 50 hours. I do not regret a minute of it and will surely play it again (you can play the game again with the already levelled up character - but it is considerably more difficult). If you like action adventures with RPG aspects, a bit of a challenge and a novel multiplayer experience, you should get this game. It's well worth the already low price.

a true RPG for the ps3

this game is great, it is one of the best action RPG's out there. theres about 10 classes to chose from but your not restricted to that classes ability ( i.e if you start the game as a knight later on in the game you can learn the abilitys of a mage). alot of people say this game is ridiculously hard but arfter you play it for a few hours you will get used to it. ok this game is an Action RPG so the fighting is that of an action/adventure game but more simple. theres loads of secrets and the boss battles are crazy, the reason i didnt give this game 5 stars is because there is no races only human and there is no co-op other than that the game is a must buy, you will find your self playing it again and again and "thehut" has the game cheapest so what are you waiting for buy the game!!

    Demons Souls haunting me!!

Just to reinforce the general consensus of opinion of this game...it is HARD! 100+ hours playtime, 140+ soul level and still getting wasted by minions on a regular level. I'm on my third play-through now and it's still as hard as when I first started. You think you know how each level will pan out, set your magic and weapons up accordingly then suddenly, out of nowhere, another online player invades your game, as a black phantom, and kills you.....grevious. I'd advise getting a spare controller for this game as my controller has been bounced off the walls, floors and various furniture items, on a regular basis, through sheer annoyance at dying from what should have been a simple encounter. (Fortunately I'm still on the original controller....) Just to summarize, If you like a challenge, and have numerous hours to lose...this is the game for you. If not, buy "bubble bobble" ;)

Not a perfect game, but about as close to it as I've seen since MGS4. When the gameplay itself is what makes a game so good, you know they're on a winner. What's said about it being unforgiving, challenging and so on is all true - the basic concept of 'if you die.. you die' is not quite accurate - just that there are serious consequences for doing so. But for RPG fans the rewards are oh-so-satisfying. Other strong points - generally well scripted, basic plot but delivered with finesse, levelling system is excellent (but also challenging), class system truly does dictate how you play... I could go on, there are many many pluses. My frustrations with it: graphics, whilst good are not 5 stars - whilst I despised FFXIII (Square you traitors..) it does have a significant edge in it's graphics. Items/weapons - this linked to the levelling system is generally very good, my only complaint relates to replayability, in that you don't get many further weapons so you rely on levelling to remain competitive or stronger than your increasingly strong enemies - not much of a complaint, since therein lies the satisfying challenge, but it was a bit dissapointing to simply stop being able to get new items after about 1.5 play throughs. In short, an excellent game - well worth the (now quite small) price tag. Get it, learn to hate it, master it, love it... then wait with baited breath for Dark Souls at the end of 2011!

Best RPG for PS3 (or any other)

Only easy thing this game is tutorial. And still end of it, you are dead. Get use to it. Don't want to spoil anymore, and I suggest you don't read hint guides or anything. This game is best played by learning as you play. And not for button smashers. Nethack & adom evolved to modern era. Me likes! :)

I have spent more than 100 hours on this game, and I can say that it is one of the most beautiful, complex and immersive game I have ever played. Demon's Souls offers a long, intense exceperience in a magic corrupted world where the player, death after death, grows up together his avatar. I believe that each videoplayer must accept the challenge offered by From Software, you will not regret!

    Hard but fulfilling experience

This is a game for every "old School" gamer out there. This game will not hold your hand. You have to try and die and try again. But if you are up for the challenge and you have the guts to continue playing even after the game has just beaten you down many many times, this your game. You just have to learn the hard way and every time you get forward, you feel that you have deserved it. Online features are implementet nicely and you will learn to watch out other players in the game. Some are nice people but others are out to get you. I say try this game out. If you are up for the challenge...

    Brutal Excellence

A lot has been said about Demon's Souls and it's difficulty. And yes the game is not faint of heart. But if you put yourself to the test through this game you will find a perfect balance between challenge and reward. This game requires complete focus, skill and patience from the player but rewards it with a great game, set in an amazing setting with great visuals and awesome music. But mostly a gameplay that's really fine tuned. Wether playing as a Thief, Knight, Mage or any of the other classes, each class feels like they should and have to be played to each class their strength. The game requires you to think and act like the character you have made. The player will find himself in a dangerous world with a seemingly impossible quest set out for him. And unlike other RPG's and action games in Demon's Souls you actually will feel threatened and as if you are set out to do the impossible! Each enemy defeated feels like an accomplishment. Each Demon slain a reward in itself. The PS3 has seen a lot of great exclusives, but no game can come close to the unique feel this game gives a player that invests in it. It's that awesome.

    Demon's Souls the best game

Demon's Souls is a dark medieval adventure. It is basically an open-ended action RPG with real-time combat, a fully customizable avatar with ten different classes. Demon's Souls is not cheap. It is punishing, but also unique. Particularly the online co-op is executed in an original if flawed way. Interaction with other players is usually passive. You will see ghost-like shadows of other players who are in your current stage. You can also read and leave messages on the ground. Demon's Souls is a decent looking PS3 RPG, setting design is fantastic. Character models and faces are good, but not great. Character animations are excellent. Story it's simple really. King Allanti XII, in seeking power and wealth for his kingdom, accidentally awoke 'The Old One' from his slumber and a great fog has spread across the land of Boletaria. Demons have infested the kingdom and soon, the fog shall cover the entire world unless brave souls are able to slay the demons and lull 'The Old One' back to sleep. You play as one such brave soul, and your actions may allow you to become Boletaria's savior, or something else. Demon's Souls is easily the most satisfying PS3 game I have ever played.

Demon's Souls the best action RPG ever made

this game is capable to keep you in front of the screen for months! The combat styles depend on the weapons you are using. Upgrade your equipment to use the best of your skills. The very great thing of this game is that its your skills that make the difference, not only the equipment! If you play well you can complete the game at first level! Matching other players in PvP is the most exciting experience i have ever played! you MUST have it!

    Demons Souls

This game play's like the classic ghost n goblins, in the fact you will die, be frustrated, and turn it off, only to turn it back on again five minutes later. The joy of defeating stages is so great because it is hard, and that's what sets this game apart, all too many modern games hold your hand and tell you how to beat them; Demons Souls tears your hand off every time you get complacent. Add the RPG elements to the perfect fighting system and you have one of the best titles ever for the PS3, its just great, buy it and buy it now, as Number 2 is in production.

    not for the faint hearted

An extremely challenging game that is quite dynamic. I haven't had the chance to play often but from my many deaths so far in the game I can certainly say that as soon as uni is done I will be playing this heaps! The gameplay is quite diverse with many different character class combinations possible. The game seems deceptively simple early (except for vanguard) on but as it progresses you can see that a lot of thought and work has been put to make the game unique for each person - from burning up demons as an early spell caster who turns into a dual wielding fiend or from an archer turn barbarian... great fun :)

'Best Game of 2009' and still is!

Demon's Souls has to be my favourite game for the PS3 so far and i have spent many hours playing. It is a hard game but the more you play it, the easier it will get. Demon's Souls will test you and your patience but it will reward you the more you play it and the more time you put into it. Don't be put off by it's difficulty because that's the point in Demon's Souls. You will die and die often but you will learn and you will just keep coming back for more. When you die you are turned into soul form which gives you the chance to aid other players in their own world or invade other players worlds to gain your soul back. When you get invaded you get such an adrenaline rush because you know you have a soul thirsty phantom hunting you down. I have never enjoyed such a hard game and such a rewarding one before. It is a MUST BUY for the Playstation 3 and every penny will be worth it and you will feel that every hour you spend playing will be worth it too.

    Challenging

Many people who have played this have said it can be hard, which it is at first, but once you learn how to fight, defend, roll to invade and other things you will start to love and really enjoy the fighting. Demon Souls is set in Boletaria, where you the hero have to go through each of the 5 'Worlds', and beat the bosses to save boletaria after is has been taken over by an evil fog. It's a typical RPG, with sword fights, magic finding weapons, leveling up using souls you get from enemies. pretty much once you mastered fighting in this game you wil be a god, where nothing can stand in your way, play the tutorial to get started as you can't die here, so it is best to learn how to fight and invade attacks from enermies. There is online here, where you can invade other worlds online, and fight others or get invaded yourself and have to defend, you can also be summoned to another world to help out someone, or you can summon someone to help you. For those you start this game and think it's hard, try to carry on, you will die a lot, but in the end it is very rewarding.

    GREAT

I don't like RPG games. I was called crazy by friends when I told them I was thinking of buying Demon's Souls. They told me I would not get past the first stage. How wrong where they. I love this game. It is indeed very unforgiving but after a few hours of play I loved it. The graphics are not the best ever but still pretty decent. The gameplay is easy but solid. The online is actually really good. It is very basic you can't invite your friends into help you but there is away to do it. You have to be with in 10 souls levels from each other. When playing your single player you will see white phantoms running around. These are other players but you can't interact with them. When your in body forum and you see a blue message on the floor this is someone willing to help you out so you can summon them into your world. You can also be invaded when your in human forum. Another player can attempted to invade you and try and kill you. If they kill you they get there body forum back. You can also invade other people as well. Just pop a black stone down and wait for the game to search for a victim. To do this you have to be in soul forum.
