A great set - the first series is one of the best series of anything, ever!
This box set includes the first two series of Auf Wiedersehen Pet, originally shown on ITV in 1983 and 1986. The first series sees seven Englishman head out to Germany for work on a building site. They find themselves working in rainy Dusseldorf, and living in an old hut by the site. It doesn't sound like fun, does it? Well it turned out to be pure TV gold, as the seven characters find themeselves getting into all kinds of trouble as they fill their nights and weekends. Characters like Oz, Wayne and Barry etched their way into the country's hearts with funny, likeable personalities. The series went on to be a huge hit and even spawned a hit record with the theme song. The second series sees the guys a few years older, but still getting themeslves into mischief. Most of the series revolves around the lads converting an old building into an old folks home. This part of the series was enjoyable, if not quite as good as the untouchable first series. The series unfortunately tails off badly towards the end, not helped by the sad death of Gary Holton, who played the likeable cockney Wayne. All in all, an excellent boxset, maybe in the future we will get a version that includes more extensive extras, but until then, this set is well worth having!
This set includes both ITV series of the classic series Auf Wiedersehen Pet. The first series is set in Germany and is still brilliant three decades later. In spite of the subject matter - seven down on their luck Brits go to Germany to work on a building site while living in a grim hut, the series is a funny, feelgood comedy drama. Some of the characters have gone down in tv history, and most of the actors went on to be well loved character actors. The second series isn't as good, not helped by the tragic death of Wayne, played by Gary Holton, halfway through filming, but still has its moments in the first few episodes while they get up to more escapades working on a derelict country manor house. The music, the culture clashes, the camaraderie, the settings (the whole idea of seven likeable rogues getting up to mischief in Germany) all add to the greatness of the series. If only there were programmes like this now!
