This is the powerful wartime story of the Ashton family, living in Liverpool during the Second World War.
The family struggles to deal with the harsh realities of war as their sons are sent away to fight and their children are evacuated to strange, previously unheard of parts of Britain. Those who remain at home live in constant fear of a knock on the door with a telegram from the War Office or the Luftwaffe bombs overhead as they sleep at night.
This unique collection contains every episode ever made of this popular, moving and poignant series which portrays life, through the Ashtons, as it was during the war years.

I can remember seeing bits of A Family At War in the 70's but to see it in its entirety is proving very enjoyable. Convincingly acted and makes you appreciate not having lived during this period.
The A Family At War - The Complete Boxed Set is well worth watching. Had this box set before, watched it and sold it on. Worst thing I ever did, so I brought them again, thanks for a quick delivery.
'Style over substance' is a phrase which all to frequently seems to apply to a lot of today's tv shows, 'A Family at War' is a great example of the days when good writing and performances were the key element in making a good drama series. Life through the eyes of the Ashton family really gets the viewer engaged in this series. It's fascinating to watch such a range of different personalities in their struggle with the various dilemmas that their situations place them in, You real feel that you can empathise even which characters which are portrayed as self-obsessed to the point of annoying, like Celia Porter, because the characters, flawed as they are, are written so well. And with great character actors like Patrick Troughton and many others, the saga of the Ashton family soon becomes compelling and addictive viewing. A great series, which was well worth buying on dvd. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
