Samsøe & Samsøe AW17
Established in Copenhagen’s Latin Quarter back in 1993, Scandi favourites Samsøe & Samsøe will enter their 25th year in 2018 with an Autumn/Winter collection that epitomises the brand’s simple, understated approach to design and meticulous attention to design, material and craftsmanship.
In its relatively short life, Samsøe & Samsøe has transformed from a modest jewellery brand operating out of Copenhagen to an international fashion house offering contemporary menswear, womenswear, footwear and accessories. Rooted in a rich heritage of Scandinavian design, the brand has won a legion of loyal fans thanks to its simple functionality and modern feel combining the utilitarian energy of Copenhagen street style with Scandinavia’s timeless creative spirit. Its collections typically defy fleeting seasonal trends, instead drawing on Denmark’s renowned design tradition to result in minimalist, affordable and accessible fashion with an identifiable Nordic blueprint.
As we welcome the mesmerising new Samsøe & Samsøe womenswear collection to The Hut for AW17, we sat down with the brand’s Creative Director, Mia Kappelgaard, to discuss what inspires her creative process, reinterpreting timeless trends, and what to expect from the Samsøe & Samsøe AW17 collection.

Samsøe & Samsøe AW17
- Question: How would you describe the Samsøe & Samsøe aesthetic?
-
Answer:
Samsøe & Samsøe designs are for the everyday woman looking for one wardrobe. Designs carry you from office to event and week to weekend. They are current, effortless and accessible – always with a nod to our Nordic heritage.
- Question: The brand is said to draw inspiration from Denmark’s longstanding design tradition. Which creations do you think the Danish are most proud of, both inside and outside of fashion?
-

They both challenged the design principles and techniques which set the standard for aesthetic approaches within design, architecture and fashion that we are still working from. I think that some of the iconic creations from the likes of Finn Juhl, Arne Jacobsen and Hans J. Wegner are still considered national treasures which most Danes are proud of…
- Question: The pared back, minimalist expression of design so readily associated with Scandinavia has been welcomed across the world over the past few years and there are many brands globally that are today drawing inspiration from this aesthetic. How have Scandinavians responded to the globalization of this trend? And is this a trend that is simply timeless in the region, or is it a trend that is perpetually being modernized?
-
Answer:
I believe that the ideas around a strong focus on materials and clean lines go hand in hand with function and reasonable pricing which reflects an everlasting Scandinavian approach. That said, new kids are constantly pushing and modernising the look and feel; putting it in a new context which I believe is a great asset when it comes to keeping Scandinavian design current and relevant.
