The Great British Bake Off is Back plus our Top Five Baking Essentials

Tonight marks the beginning of The Great British Bake Off Series Five and frankly, we can’t wait. Can you believe that it’s been a year since we last saw Paul Hollywood’s innuendos and Mary Berry’s jazzy bomber jackets light up the screen? We’ve been missing the soggy bottoms of the contestants but now we have twelve new bakers to cheer on.

From the 17 year old Martha who is the youngest person to ever grace the Bake Off tent to the 69 year old Diana who has been a member of the Women’s Institute since she was a teenager, there are plenty of new personalities to fall in love with.

The show has now moved over to BBC One but don’t worry, nothing will change! We’ll still have the same challenges, the same baking banter from Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins, the history lesson and Paul’s baby blues.

The series kicks off with the classic ‘Cakes’ episode, challenging the contestants to create signature bakes and technical challenges. We’re expecting to see some exciting bakes tonight, hopefully without a soggy bottom in sight.

To get you prepared to get your bake on, we’ve out together our top ten baking essentials to inspire you to whip out your apron!

Morphy Richards hand mixer in blue from

If you don’t have the time to cream sugar and butter together for your Victoria sponge, opt for a hand or stand mixer to make the job easier on your arms and give your mixture a light and airy texture. This Morphy Richards hand mixer is one of our favourites as it’s small, light, easy to use and at £13.99 it’s an absolute steal!

Cook in Colour traditional kitchen scales in red from

An essential for any baker (though some contestants in The Great British Bake Off series five think otherwise…) to ensure the recipe is followed to the gram. We love this brightly coloured set of weighing scales from Cook in Colour, which you can read more about here.

Joseph Joseph nest of bowls from

This Joseph Joseph nest of bowls is an absolute dream for any baker with limited space, it is a seven piece set that all fit neatly inside one another saving you a huge amount of space. The set includes 5 measuring cups, 1 small mixing bowl and 1 large mixing bowl both with non-slip grip on the base. Our resident baker swears by this set, if you have cup measurements for your recipe, you don’t even need scales!

Great British Bake Off cupcake tray from

A muffin or cupcake tin is an essential for making cupcakes or fairy cakes. This Great British Bake Off tin is perfect for buns and smaller cupcakes, but if you prefer deep cupcakes or muffins, opt for this 12 cup non-stick muffin sheet. Get some brightly coloured or patterned cupcake cases to make them even more tempting.

Stainless steel sieve by The Great British Bake Off from

Nobody wants to discover lumps in their cakes, I’m afraid you would be banished from the tent for that. Avoid lumps and bumps in your cake mix by sieving the flour with this Great British Bake Off Stainless Steel Sieve. Sorted.

You can take a look at The Great British Bake Off range here to get your oven mitts on baking goodies approved by the team themselves.
