Godzilla and 3 of the Best Monster Movies

We’re all totally excited here at The Hut for the upcoming release of the new Godzilla film, directed by British filmmaker Gareth Edwards and staring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ken Watanabe, Elizabeth Olsen, Juliette Binoche, Sally Hawkins, David Strathairn and Bryan Cranston.

As reviews of the latest blockbuster from Warner Bros. file in with increasingly positive scores – IGN gave the film 9 out of 10 and saying ‘Godzilla comes back to roaring, vivid life in a film that captures the complex nature of the creature.’ They also praised the performance of Cranston (of Breaking Bad and Malcolm in the Middle fame), calling it a ‘brilliant, gripping, gut-punching performance. He not just sinks, but tears his teeth into the role.’

As such, and in order to quell our nascent anticipation, we’ve selected 3 of the best monster movies of all time to help keep you occupied until you see it!

Trollhunter (2011)

Equal parts hilarious and frightening, the Norwegian Trollhunter is a must see. Praised universally by critics and audiences alike, the film follows a group of university students as they set out to make a documentary about someone they suspect to be a bear poacher. However, as you can probably imagine, it isn’t bears they end up finding…

The Bride of Frankenstein (1935)

The acclaimed sequel to the original Frankenstein has become one of the most popular horror classics in film history. The legendary Boris Karloff reprises his role as the screen’s most misunderstood monster, now longing for a mate of his own. Colin Clive is back as the proud and overly ambitious Dr. Frankenstein, who creates the ill-fated bride (Elsa Lanchester). The last horror film directed by James Whale features a haunting musical score that helps make The Bride of Frankenstein one of the finest and most touching thrillers of its era.

Alien (1979)

Alien is the first movie of one of the most popular sagas in science fiction history, and introduces Sigourney Weaver as Ripley, the iron-willed woman destined to battle the galaxy’s ultimate creature. The terror begin when the crew of the spaceship Nostromo investigates a transmission from a desolate planet and makes a horrifying discovery – a life form that breeds within a human host. Now the crew must fight now only for its survival, but for the survival of all mankind.
