I have always been a fan of all the other "Driver" games right back to the PS1 when I had a demo disc and first played it, with terrible graphics and unrealistic driving skills, I was surprised I liked it. When I saw Driver: San Francisco come out, I wanted it. I tried the demo on the Xbox and thought it was good, the driving has become somewhat realistic - the car responds how you would expect it to respond and when you crash (I hardly crash!) the way the car takes damage/moves is very realistic, definitely better graphics and a sense that you are actually in the car. I also felt it was a little bit like GTA, in the way that you could "hijack" any car and drive around, and do missions whenever you wanted to - this is a good idea, but I feel that Ubisoft should have integrated it like in TestDriver 2, where the online and the offline both take place together, i.e. there are other guys driving around the city and shifting to different vehicles rather than just yourself - but for a mission, they disappear etc. That is the only real downside, oh and the people - although it's good to have them, you can't hit them, which is good but sometimes they just disappear but apart from that the game is fantastic!
If you've played driver and driver 2 you will love this game! It plays like one of the old police chases, drifting around each corner! Upsides - great graphics + licensed cars + great AI + lots to do! Downsides - the story is a little lame.
Driver: San Francisco has a great engine, awesome graphics, great gameplay with a comic book fantastical deep storyline, lacks the spine tingling tension of the original driver game experience. As the new shift system gets you out of any bind your driving talents get you into, progression for less experienced drivers continues with ease, which seems to detach from the point of a driving game. Although for the hardcore of you, you'll find you use it only when required for the story, which amps the pressure back on skill and road handling prowess, high speed cornering and traffic management talent. Don't be put off as saying this if you're new to this title you will be blown away as it's an awesome game. 8.5/10 - genres moved on but worth it's salt for the price. Absolute bargain for this price.
