dirt
It's not details like these that make Dirt 2 such a superb racing game though. What makes Dirt 2 so special is the fact that its multiple difficulty levels and forgiving gameplay mechanics make it accessible to newcomers while offering a significant challenge for veterans of Codemasters' Colin McRae Rally series and other off-road racers. There's also the single-player mode that spans no fewer than 100 events (often comprising multiple races), a suite of multiplayer options that includes plenty of different modes and leaderboards, and, of course, your sweet RV, which fills with souvenirs from all of the locations that you race at as your career progresses. If you have even a passing interest in off-road racing, you won't regret a second spent behind the wheel of Dirt 2.

A solid update to Dirt but too American
Dirt was a great game, more arcade than sim like all of Codemasters recent efforts. It showed off the brilliant Neon engine (leading onto the EGO engine). Dirt had near photo realistic rally stages, along with hillclimbs, sprint tracks and longer trail races. Vehicles ranged from rally cars, to trucks, buggies and outrageous hillclimb monsters. Basically Dirt was a game with something for every off-road fan. Dirt 2 drops all the best elements of the first game, instead focusing on the American X-Games and the sub culture goes along with it. Gone are the rally tracks from across the globe, replaced with a very small roster of tracks from a small selection of locales. Tracks look superb, but unfortunately you'll be racing on them VERY often. Complementing the small roster of tracks is an equally paltry array of cars. In some ways Dirt 2 is 3 steps forwards (better graphics, better car physics and greater damage) but 5 steps back (lack of rally stages, loss of hillclimbs, small number of tracks & cars, overly American). Well worth the discounted purchase price and an 4/5 from me.

Glossiest Rally game ever
Not really sure why Colin McRae's name is attached to this game - he can't have had much to do with its development, what with his tragic death in 2007, and to my mind this is the most Americanised, most unrally-like take on rallying in console games yet. On the plus side this the presentation of this game is second to none. The game's front end is a bit gimmicky, but the in game visuals are gorgeous. The handling is improved from DiRT, providing a little bit more of a challenge, but this is still very much an arcade racer as opposed to a rally sim.
