Brütal Legend tells the tale of Eddie Riggs, played by Jack Black, who is drawn back through time to a mythical world immersed in rock 'n' roll folklore; where great Metal titans once ruled and power chords rang from the countryside for all to hear. When an oppressed people request Eddie's knowledge of modern warfare, he pulls from his own experience in the only occupation he's ever had, a roadie for a Heavy Metal band. From this springs the most hellacious army man has ever seen, and thus brings this ancient world into the Age of Metal.

Fantastic...for the first 3 hours
Jack Black aside (you either love him or hate him it seems) this is a game that is really two different games in one. The story starts off as a free-roaming action adventure game where you control Eddie, the protagonist. The first couple of hours has you merrily rumbling around the countryside surrounded by an amazingly decorated world of metal-based paraphenalia. Unbeknown to me the single player is in fact just an elaborate tutorial with a good story thrown in. This became clear about 3 hours in when I came across my first 'stage battle'. Stage battles are basically the multiplayer battles and is kind of a like an RTS but with the resources management basically stripped out. I'll be honest and say that I hated it. It was at that point the game went downhill dramatically. The single player story isnt very long at all and despite all the fantastic cameos and Jack Blacks (in my opinion) return to form it still failed to convince me that this was a wise purchase. The stage battles are not particularly fun and what was an amazing action style explorer game turned into a horrible RTS. Very disappointed. But that said if you like the RTS concepts but find them too much to micromanage then you may enjoy the multiplayer.
