I have just looked through the listings of DVDs and have to say that I'm thrilled to find "Roots" offered at such a great price. I would recommend the viewing of this to anyone, even if they didn't see the series when it was shown originally on TV. A fantastic opportunity to re-watch such a marvellous drama again - it provokes a great deal of consideration about the history of slavery and all those involved.
I watched this drama when it was first released on to British television thirty years odd ago, and although not convinced of its complete authenticity I enjoyed it immensely. I am very glad to have the oppotunity to be able to own it and watch it again. Video recorders were in their infancy when I first saw it, and if you missed something, or wanted to watch a particular scene again - tough! The content, as I recall is quite brutal, and at times, highly charged; dealing with the very emotive subject of slavery, their mistreatment, and the atitudes of the slave owners in the deep south of America in the mid 18th century. Of course, age changes one's perspective on things (I am now 66) and it will be interesting to find how I feel about the more sensitive issues portrayed in this production today.I hope I am as outraged now as I was by some of the scenes when I was a young man. There are some rich and amusing characters within (Chicken George) As well as some very tragic figures (Kizzy) There are scenes that will make you smile, others to make you angry, and some to invoke a tear or two. I remember thinking that the first half of the story was the most entertaining, and felt that the latter half trailed off a tad, concentrating more on latter day political issues than on the characters themselves. Of course, I may be wrong, but there has been much water flow beneath my bridge since I first saw it. If you haven't seen it before, I recommend it highly to you, especially at the price at which it is offered. Ceegel.
The most touching story of slavery ever told. We have to learn what history told us and never make same mistakes. It will make you sad, cry, laugh and feel sorry.
