I'm H.A.P.P.Y. I'm H.A.P.P.Y...
A huge ratings success for ITV, Only When I Laugh was written by Eric Chappell (Rising Damp, Home to Roost) and directed by Vernon Lawrence (Duty Free, The Bounder). The series starred James Bolam (Beiderbecke), Peter Bowles (To the Manor Born) and Christopher Strauli (Raffles) as three congenital hypochondriac layabouts forever haunting the ward patrolled by the droll Doctor Thorpe (Richard Wilson - One Foot in the Grave).

Hospital settings may be a cliche in romantic soap opera, from Dr Kildare and Emergency Ward 10 onwards, but as far as I know this is their only venture into the world of TV sitcoms. Perhaps it was this originality which helped the show become such a huge popular success in its day. But what really keeps audiences tuning in, I think, is an entertaining cast of characters, and Only When I Laugh has its share. All 29 episodes are included here - four series plus the Christmas special and each one manages to come up with a fresh take on the situation. That's quite a feat for a show with such a limited setting. Frankly, I think you'd have to be as miserable as Figgis himself if this lot didn't keep you happy.
