While their mother recovers from an illness, Satsuki and her little sister Mei (voiced in English by Dakota Fanning and Elle Fanning) get away from it all in an idyllic rural retreat. Far from the bustle of the city, they discover a mysterious place of spirits and magic, and the friendship of the Totoro woodland creatures.
Conceived as a family film devoid of conflict and suffused with the carefree pleasures of the summertime, My Neighbour Totoro sees Hayao Miyazaki create a parable of friendship and imagination populated with unforgettable characters.
A universal classic for all generations, My Neighbour Totoro shows Japanese animation's famous Studio Ghibli at its very best, and is an elegy to two ever-fading miracles: the fairytale world of childhood and the disappearing countryside.

A perfect film for a rainy sunday afternoon. My neighbour totoro has a slow but relaxing pace yet still keeps people of all ages captivated from start to finish.
While Satsuki & Mei's mother is recovering from an illness in hospital, their father moves them to an old house out in the country, and their lives take a turn for the magical. The supernatural creatures in this movie are charming, with hardly anything to even startle my 2 1/2-year-old (who LOVES it) and there is very little stress or conflict of any kind, and yet the story is enchanting. The girls' father is shown treating his children with such respect when they come to him with tales of the strange beings they've encountered: rather than dismissing them as lies, he teaches them to laugh away their fears, and to show respect themselves. With delightful music, beautiful animation and a happy ending played out in still images through the credits (don't turn it off too fast!) this is a story filled with kindness and hope, without being schmaltzy or heavy-handed.
