The mythical city of Camelot, in a time before history began, is a fantastical realm of legendary beasts and mysterious peoples. In this dangerous world, magic has been banned by the ruthless tyrant, Uther Pendragon. Merlin, a young man gifted with extraordinary magical powers arrives at the gates of Camelot as a young man, sent by his mother to start a new life. Though bright-eyed with wonder, the young sorcerer quickly makes enemies, including the heir to Uther's crown, the headstrong Prince Arthur.
Guided by Uther's wise physician, Gaius, Merlin is soon using his talents not just to survive but also to unlock Camelot's mystical secrets. And, as he does so, he discovers that his destiny and that of the kingdom's young leader in waiting, Arthur, are inextricably linked.

Fantastic series. Totally glued to every episode. Superb acting, great story lines and good humour. What more can you ask for. Absolutely love this series and can't wait for the next one.
Set in the mythical land of Camelot, Merlin is probably the biggest family series the BBC have produced baring Doctor Who. And like that, it has everything you could want from Family entertainment. Monsters, Magic, a talking dragon, the list goes on. The cast are well assembled and all work well together, from the relatively unknown Colin Morgan (Merlin) right through to the talents of Anthony Head as Uther (Giles, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and Richard Wilson (one foot in the Grave) as Gaius, Merlin's mentor. The Stories are generally strong, with few that leave you thinking they could have done better. Still this is just the first season, and it sets up stories for later seasons quite nicely. If you joined the series in the second, third or even currently airing fourth season, but missed the first, then this is a must buy, and a steal at this price. It will keep the kids and the adults alike entertained.
I Got this for my daughter and it is awesome entertainment for all ages. Of course I cheer on the bad guys, but then my daughter feels pleased when good prevails over evil. I highly Recommended.
Fab, fab, fab! The whole family can enjoy!
This boxset of Merlin showcasees everything the first series has to offer. Containing six discs, four of which contain all 13 of the series' episodes and the other two special features: such as behind the scenes clips and actors commentaries The first series of Merlin was the most successful remake of the "King Arthur" period for several years. With a family friendly dynamic of subtle humour, splashes of magic and child friendly plots it was the perfect family programme. This surely hailed the return of the great "Saturday night 7 'o clock television" a title hailed to programmes such as Doctor Who. The scene is set well in the first episode, a land where magic is outlawed upon penalty of death, with the main character being possibly one of the most powerful warlocks in history. This young, brash, and foolish Merlin immediately butted heads with the cocky and pompous prince Arthur. Ending up in jail minutes after their first meeting. As such they naturally develop a love hate relationship, which blooms further after the two are forced together as master and servant, after Merlin saves Arthur from a revenge-seeking witch. From here on the series ticks along at a steady pace, with each episode bringing a new danger to the kingdom of Camelot, which Merlin must solve without letting anyone know it is through magic. And so, through this constant stream of disasters we see the two protagonists grow closer together in a brotherly kind of relationship (except for the servant element of course) that creates a feel good feeling for all the family. The series also have several subtle hints to the grand future to come, the inclusion of Lancelot being a key moment for this. The finale of the series is a bit mellow for my tastes, but that could just be due to too much expierience of the over the top Doctor Who Finales. It sets a suitable emotional trauma for the protagonists with the danger of Camelot starving and the eventual situation of either Arthur or Merlin sacrificing themselves for the other. But the tameness of the entire series is a little dissapointing for me, which is the main reason for the four stars. This is also due to the low quality CGI, effects and some poor storylines. However as the series progresses and gains more popularity I'm sure these issues will be resolved with a larger budget. The special features discs contain ample amount to watch for the devout hardcore fans out there, or those who are simply interested in the crafting of Camelot. The box is well crafted, with a suitably simple design that appears satisfying complex, with enough material to provide adequate protection for your discs. Overall, a great series with a few flaws that are only down the budget of a first series and are sure to be improved upon in the future. With a wide range of special features, and well crafted box and a great price it's a must buy for anyone, at any age.
I'm not one to enjoy films or programmes about medieval times or magic but I was very pleasently surprised by this programme. Although it's set a long way in the past they use slightly modern language. It's comical, serious and romantic all in one and every episode will keep you on the edge of your seat!
The first series is excellent. I would recommend it to anyone. I was mesmerised by it, it is well worth the money. If you are looking for something to entertain you, then this is it, it is funny, charming, spellbinding, and it puts you on the edge of your seat.
