The previous Dr Who Complete Series box sets have been essential purchases and series 5 is no different. Matt Smith makes an impressive debut as the 11th Doctor and the stories take on more of an adult theme with Mr Moffat now at the hem.
Excellent Series with all the extras, why can not all tv series be this good.
Excellent value for money, would definitely buy from the Hut again, especially for my christmas bits!
Purchased for my son who is a serious Dr Who fan, thought the set was brilliant.
Since Dr Who's regeneration in 2005, each successive series has improved. Matt Smith looked an unlikely candidate for the new doctor after the sublime run of form from David Tennant - he was too young, too weird looking and no one had seen him in anything! How would he compare to the previous greats? Well, fantastically! Smith has garnered accolades and has even been BAFTA nominated for his acting as the Doctor - quite some achievement. This series also marked the debut of Stephen Moffat as the lead writer - responsible for by far the best new episodes of "new" Dr Who such as Blink and The Girl in the Fireplace - and features a strong story arc that eclipses Russell T Davies runs easily. The series is a hoot - mixing comedy and scifi horror, and along the way we meet the rebooted Silurians, cybermen and a creepy dream master too... The highlight of the set though is the epic two-part pandorica finale which is simply outstanding. Possibly the best Who story ever - (...until the Silence arrives in series 6 that is!) Doctor Who finally gets the cutting edge, modern, time-travelling adventures it deserves, with mind-bending plot twists, and great characters! I will always enjoy Pertwee and baker, as that was my era, but Matt Smith and Steven Moffat have evolved the series far beyond the shaky cardboard sets and rubber monster masks of old. At this price too - an excellent value set for the kids at Christmas - and one the parents can enjoy too - as it's the best Dr Who box set there is - until series 6 is released!
I must admit I had reservations about the new Doctor, played by Matt Smith, not only because of his age (he's the youngest actor ever to play the role) but because he was following Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant, two excellent Doctors. But I'm happy to say I was proved wrong. Smith has proved himself more than up to the challenge, and has produced my favourite Doctor since Tom Baker! The series starts strongly by introducing a new Doctor and new companion, AND giving them a back story, within the first 15 minutes, before launching them into their first adventure. The series continues with high quality adventures, through chilling encounters with (amongst others) the weeping angels and the Silurians before culminating in a slightly confusing final chapter which involves the Doctor's enemies ganging up on him. (Every nerd's dream.) Paradoxically the only real downer of the series was the Doctor's encounter with his old enemies, and fan-favourites, the Daleks. The episode started well, but the second half saw the Daleks change almost beyond recognition and become notably less menacing than usual, with their new design and colour scheme. However that is a small quibble in an otherwise excellent series, and a flawless debut from Smith. After the angst-ridden days of Tennant, it was a welcome return to old-school adventures for the Doctor. Long may Matt Smith continue in the role!
I became totally obsessed with Doctor who upon watching the first David Tennant episode. I was devastated when I found out David was leaving and outraged at the thought of him being replaced. But to tell the truth Matt Smith is actually rather good. Also Karen Gillan is a fatastic new companion. An all round brilliant series with 13 really well written episodes. Would Definitely recommend to a friend.
AMAZING!!!! Matt Smith shows his funny side, his dark side and brave side. Sometimes even all at once and Karen Gillian captures our hearts. From Weeping Angels to the Saturnynes... Doctor Who never fails to impress. Just one thing: there's not an audio or visual commentry for every episode but I'm sure we can put this behind us. Overall it's 13 episodes of pure bliss, love, evil, comedy, action and a whole box set more...
