Probably the most famous band in the history of popular music, the Beatles were a cultural phenomenon, the likes of which had never been seen before, who are able to boast record sales that have surpassed the billion mark across their 6 decade career. However more than their truly astounding commercial success, they have remained an important influence in the development of music with artists as diverse as Oasis, Queen and the Electric Light Orchestra all drawing inspiration from the bands iconic musical works which introduced countless, now legendary songs to millions of people across the globe. Now thanks to the marvel of digital remastering their great albums can be heard with a clarity that was previously inconceivable.
Released in 1968 "The Beatles" was the fab four's ninth studio album, better known as "The White Album", captured the band at their most individual and experimental as they sought to escape the expectations that surrounded them after the release of "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band". McCartney's fantastic guitar driven parody of the Beach Boys and Chuck Berry "Back in the U.S.S.R" opens the album on a high. Other notable highlights of the album consist of the reggae inspired freewheeler "Ob La Di, Ob La Da", George Harrison's striking "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and Lennon's bluesy musing on the social upheaval of the late 1960's "Revolution 1". Taken as an entire album it might not be as consistent as the bands earlier works but its vast size and wide scope more than make up for this. (Adam Bibby)
