5 Winter Workouts and What to Wear

The last remaining chocolate has finally been eaten and it’s time to start the annual detox after the indulgence of December but there’s no need to panic, it’s a chance to start afresh and get healthy!

Why not start by detoxing your gym bag? Choosing the right pieces from our range of high performance sportswear will mean that you’ll be ready for whatever 2015 has to throw at you!

Whether you have sworn to take up running or have decided to work on your core with yoga, we have just the outfit for you so take a look at our trend edits and feel your best during your workout.

Running

If you’re opting to pick up your trainers and head out for a run this January, make sure you’re prepared with all the gear you need. It’s vital to wear layers when running in winter as this will regulate your temperature better keeping the heat in without over heating you. We recommend a sports bra, t-shirt or vest and a long sleeved top or insulated lightweight jacket, if it’s really cold add another long sleeved top underneath. Running gloves are also key in winter to keep your hands protected in cold weather.

Pick the right pair of trainers for you by taking a look at our easy to follow guide here. We love these Under Armour Engage Running Shoes as they are lightweight, supportive and responsive.

A good sports bra is a runner’s best friend, it will give you all the support you need to get though that extra mile! If you’re running on the treadmill instead of on the road, simply ditch the extra layers and gloves then you’re ready to go!

If you’re running on the road or pavement, don’t forget to wear a reflective band to help drivers and pedestrians see you, especially in this all black outfit!

Yoga

And… breathe. After all the stress of heading back to work after Christmas, indulge in one of the most relaxing and rewarding exercises; yoga.

If you’re heading to a class or working out at home, we have everything you need to get started. You can play around a little with your style in yoga as you don’t need to worry about the elements (unless you’re practicing outside!), we suggest layering up crop tops and vests to give yourself a unique look. This also means you can take a layer off if needed!

We also recommend adding a zing to your workout with the Citrus Zinger water bottle, easily add a citrus splash to your water to revitalise you.

Swimming

Swimming is amazing for toning up and burning calories, plus it requires very little equipment, just a swimsuit and a towel with optional goggles of course!

Simply find a suit that works for you and you’re ready to go, but if you want to get serious, grab yourself a swimming cap and goggles to make sure you’re streamlined.

Having a water bottle handy is always a good idea, even though you’re submerged in water, it’s important to hydrate, especially if you head to the sauna afterwards!

Hiking

Hiking at this time of year is the perfect way to see the frosty landscape from a different perspective, but it can be dangerous. The weather is changeable, the temperature near freezing and the conditions are often treacherous so choose your route carefully. Take a look at our post detailing the routes of five winter walks in Britain for everyone from beginners to hardcore hikers, read more here.

A well-insulated jacket, base layers, waterproof  clothing and gloves are the key to keeping warm when you’re in the elements for long periods of time. Layers will trap heat meaning that a few thin layers will keep you warmer than one big one, bear that in mind when you’re planning your kit.

Strength Training

Strong is the new skinny so pick up those weights and try strength training this year! Not only will it build your strength, it will also help you tone up and lose weight.

Support is key for strength training so opt for trainers with a sturdy sole and plenty of grip, these Adidas sequence trainers are great as they’re lightweight, support your foot and the Continental rubber outsole has amazing grip.

Team them up with the brand new printed leggings from MyProtein, a supportive sports bra and vest from Gola for easy movement and you’re ready to lift.
